Starting June 1, 2020 Metro ExpressLanes will begin testing the Occupancy Detection System along the 1-10 and I-110 ExpressLanes to take advantage of the recent decrease in traffic. This technology uses cameras to determine the number of persons in a vehicle and compares it to the switch setting on the transponder. The Occupancy Detection System will correct instances where a transponder has been incorrectly set to the toll-free HOV mode and there are not enough passengers present to qualify for toll-free travel. This technology is designed to handle all common passenger arrangements including small children placed in car seats or located in the back seat. All facial images will be redacted for privacy purposes.
Additional communication will be sent out before this system goes live. Occupancy Correction Violation notices will not be mailed out during the testing period.
